Product Description

The M5X piston motor is a highly specialized hydraulic component primarily designed for specific, heavy-duty applications within the mobile machinery industry. Its integrated valving and braking system makes it ideally suited for functions requiring precise control of rotation and robust holding power.

Key Features of the M5X piston motor

  • Integrated Valving for Swing Function: The motor incorporates built-in main relief valves and make-up valves (anti-reaction valves) within the motor's valve block. This design provides smooth control over acceleration and deceleration, minimizes shock during operation, and simplifies the external hydraulic piping.

  • Built-in Parking Brake: Features an integral spring-applied, pressure-released mechanical wet multi-disc brake. This essential safety feature restricts rotation and securely locks the superstructure in place when hydraulic power is removed.

  • Compact Construction: The M5X series achieves a highly compact design by neatly arranging the piston group, mechanical brake, and integrated valves within the housing, making it ideal for the limited space available in mobile machinery.

  • Direct Gearbox Connection: The mounting flange is enlarged to allow for direct connection to the ring gear of a reduction gearbox, streamlining the overall drive assembly and contributing to cost reduction in system design.

  • High Performance and Reliability: Building on Kawasaki's extensive experience with previous series, the M5X is designed for high reliability and a long service life, even under the high pressures and cyclic loads typical of excavator operations.

Application

Primary Application: Excavator Swing Drives
The overwhelming majority of M5X motors are used in the slew or swing mechanism of hydraulic excavators, ranging from mini-excavators to large construction machines.
  • Function: It controls the horizontal rotation of the excavator's superstructure (the cab, arm, and counterweight assembly) on its undercarriage via a large ring gear.

  • Suitability: The M5X's integrated brake ensures the excavator stays fixed when not rotating, and the anti-reaction valves provide smooth acceleration and deceleration, preventing jerky movements of the arm and bucket.

Secondary Applications
Due to the requirements for controlled rotation and integrated safety braking, the M5X motor is also used in related heavy-duty machinery:

How does the variable displacement work?

The motor's flow is adjusted by changing the angle of an internal swash plate. As the swash plate angle changes, the stroke length of the pistons varies, which in turn changes the volume of fluid displaced per rotation, allowing the flow rate to adapt to the system's needs.
