How Does a Hydraulic Piston Pump Work?

Hydraulic piston pump, most commonly an axial piston pump, is a positive displacement device widely used in high-pressure hydraulic systems.
It mainly consists of a drive shaft, a rotating cylinder block with multiple pistons (usually 7–9), a swashplate (or bent-axis design), and a valve plate.

Here's how it works:

The drive shaft rotates the cylinder block. The pistons are arranged parallel to the shaft axis and their ends contact the angled swashplate via slippers or shoes. As the block spins, the angled swashplate forces each piston to reciprocate — moving in and out of its cylinder bore.
During the suction phase, the piston retracts, increasing the volume in the cylinder. This creates a low-pressure area, drawing hydraulic fluid (usually oil) in through the inlet port in the valve plate.
During the discharge phase, the piston extends, decreasing the volume and pressurizing the fluid. The high-pressure fluid is forced out through the outlet port.
Because multiple pistons operate in sequence, the pump delivers a relatively smooth, continuous flow. Many axial piston pumps are variable displacement: adjusting the swashplate angle changes piston stroke length, controlling output flow rate while the shaft speed remains constant. At zero angle, flow stops completely.
